25 years. Can you believe that it’s been that long since we were first introduced to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (also known as TMNT)? What started out as a comic book that made its debut in the mid-80s has overtime become a pop culture phenomenon thanks to the four main characters Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael and their presence in everything from comics and cartoons to toys and video games. And let’s not forget feature films too.
In fact, since making their official premiere back in 1984, the TMNT have been in three different animated series (one of which is currently running on Nickelodeon) and also four different movies: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III and TMNT. The first three movies were released in the 90s. The last film came out in 2007. Collectively, all four movies have grossed, to-date, an impressive total of $310,345,435. Therefore, it would make perfect sense why last year an announcement was made that there would be another installment.
While the details about the movie have been somewhat vague (other than the fact that stars like Megan Fox and Whoopi Goldberg will be starring in it and the overall premise is about the TMNT protecting the earth from the invasion of aliens), there are three things that Peter Laird, co-creator of TMNT, has shared. One, the movie will remain true to the spirit of the comic books. Two, we can expect to see some face replacement technology in this upcoming film. And three, it has been revealed what the main characters of the movie will look like.
When it comes to Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael, their turtle designs will remain pretty traditional. They will each still have their respective weapons and their masks will maintain the color-coded ones that they’ve always worn. As far as their stature, Raphael will be the most muscular of the four, followed by Leonardo. You can expect Donatello to have a much leaner look and Michelangelo will definitely be the shortest of the four.
For those of you who have been following the TMNT for quite some time now, you already know that there are two other characters that play a part in the storyline: Master Splinter and Shredder. When it comes to Master Splinter’s look, he will have a Fu Manchu style moustache, his hair will be in a bun and he will be wearing a tattered samurai outfit. Shredder will be covered up in metal and armor blades from head to toe; by far, his appearance is expected to be the most multi-dimensional.
Currently, this is pretty much the only information that is currently being offered about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie; however, being that it’s slated for August 2014 release, you can be sure that more details will be provided as it gets closer to the premiere. In the meantime, Laird has a blog that he updates fairly regularly with some of the latest TMNT news. If you’d like to check it out, visit PeterLairdsTMNTBlog.blogspot.com.
