If you happen to watch any of Bravo TV’s “Real Housewives” shows, you’ve got to admit that there is quite of bit of irony to it. Take The Real Housewives of Atlanta, for example. Although there is the word “housewives” in the title, three of the stars are not wives. Kandi Burruss is engaged, Porsha Stewart is newly divorced and Kenya Moore is single.
Yet for whatever the reason, that one obvious contradiction has not stopped them or the other Housewives shows from being a favorite for many viewers on a weekly basis. So much in fact that since the shows made their way onto the airwaves back in 2006, there are six different versions of it with four that are currently airing: The Real Housewives of Atlanta, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, The Real Housewives of New York City and The Real Housewives of Orange County.
And apparently, aside from the fact that the characters on the shows are so much of a guilty pleasure for so many viewers that they are now some of the top-rated reality programs in all of television, it has actually taken some of these “common housewives” and turned them into true celebrities.
Take Real Housewives of Atlanta star NeNe Leaks, for example. As one of the original members of the show, not only has her fame earned her a returning spot on Glee and a starring role in the now canceled New Normal, but she has just been announced as a contestant on an upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars. Plus, she is reportedly the highest earning housewife with a paycheck per season that is an amazing one million dollars (plus bonuses).
Next up on the pay scale is the New Jersey housewife Teresa Giudice. In fact, her show is referred to by many as the one that most watchers “love to hate”. It draws in approximately three million viewers every episode. Giudice earns $650,000 per season.
And then there are the New York ladies. As far as salaries go, reportedly Ramona Singer and Countess LuAnn DeLesseps, women who have been on the show since it first aired, are also making a nice amount: a cool half-million each season.
As far as the Orange County ladies, they aren’t doing too shabby either. Both Gretchen Rossi and Tamra Barney both make around $375,000.
This, on top of the fact that many of the women are constantly in the press for things that they are doing and places that they are going, both on and off camera, it’s simply amazing to see how much reality television has changed the lives (and for some, the quality of life) for so many people who, in most cases, don’t really act or sing or much else in entertainment. They simply let a camera follow them around as they live out their lives on a daily basis.
Of course, this isn’t something that we’re not accustomed to. The Kardashians made history back in 2012 for being paid a staggering $40 million by E! for their reality show.
So whether you love reality television, or more specifically, The Real Housewives or not, there are three things that are certain: they are really famous, they continue to get richer and apparently they’re here to stay, married or not, for quite some time. At least if Bravo, and their ratings have, anything to say about. Stay tuned.
