Hosting a New Year’s Eve party can be a brilliant way to bring friends together to celebrate in style, but it can also be a little stressful in its planning and hosting. Deciding to make the night a fancy dress occasion can set the stage for a smooth evening – everyone has something to talk about, because they can comment on each other’s outfits and recognise characters that spark conversation about the film or movie they have come from, and having everyone looking hilarious immediately has guests relaxing and ready to enjoy themselves.
First of all, choose a theme. It needs to be something that is accessible to the wide range of guests who will be invited, taking into consideration their age range, and also something that can be achieved on a budget. Not everyone wants to go all out shopping for costume pieces and spend a fortune for one night’s fun! Themes need to be explicit and clear, kept simple but not too vague that no one knows what it means. Hopefully, most people are able to customise and co-ordinate items they already own to put together a great outfit in keeping with the night – try and consider whether suitable items would be available in charity shops, if not. Some fantastic budget friendly themes are ‘black and white’ or a winter trip to Hawaii, superheroes and villains or a ‘high school’ theme.
Secondly, consider where the party is going to be held. If it’s at home, get decorating! Putting up bunting and banners which match the colour theme can really help to make the difference between a good night and a great one. If your group is going out into town for drinks, this matters less – but it becomes more important to make an effort with the costume so that you are all a recognisable group. Practical concerns also become important at this stage, as skimpy costumes are not ideal in winter no matter what the theme is, not if you’re going to be walking between venues or catching a bus home at the end of the night. However a well thought out group theme can have its perks, and you may find you get to skip queues or get free drinks. Remember, all attention is good attention!
Finally, as the host or organiser, make sure you have a great costume yourself. It needs to be something in which you can still move freely, especially at home where you might be needing to put out snacks or arrange the music, but above all else make sure your costume properly committed to the theme. Make yourself stand out with some costume contact lenses to add real wow factor to an outfit and to make sure everyone knows who is looking the best. It’s your New Year’s Eve party – make sure that is you!
