A Competitive Environment

Over the last several years, New Yorkers have been presented with more options than ever before when it comes to choosing video, telephone and broadband internet services.

Throughout the state, customers can choose from a minimum of three and in some cases up to five different video service providers.  In addition to their local Cable companies, options include direct broadcast satellite services (DBS) and video offerings from traditional phone companies.  DBS companies (Direct TV and DISH Network) are now the second and third largest video providers in the country and provide services to 25% of New York’s residential market.

Similarly, real competition now exists in the provision of voice services, with cable, wireless and internet-based voice providers competing with traditional phone companies.  Currently, 2.3 million New Yorkers select cable digital phone service and have saved $300 million annually in the process.

New York’s residents and businesses also have access to some of the highest speed broadband services in the country and can choose to purchase these services from cable, wireless, satellite and traditional telephone company providers.

This competitive environment benefits all consumers, as it pushes all forms of providers to constantly upgrade their systems, their offerings of services and their connection speeds.

The Cable Telecommunications Association of New York and its member organizations welcome fair competition that provides all players - both current providers and any groups new to the market place - with a level playing field.

Cable companies have faced vigorous competition from satellite television firms for a number of years.  In recent years, phone companies have added video options, as well.  We welcome the entry of new providers into our industry, so long as they are playing by the same set of rules.
Currently, the New York Public Service Commission has rules in place that allow new providers of video service to receive a franchise in just 30 days, providing they agree to follow all the terms and conditions agreed to by other current franchise holders.  Sounds fair enough, doesn't it?
